My husband and I love this recipe, we don't like things real sweet and it was just right. Sometimes I will use chicken thighs but is is delicious with either. Great meal

Definitely not what I was expecting. I found it to be not sweet enough and so complex in flavor that it overwhelmed my taste buds and not in a good way.

Easy to make and absolutely delicious. I slightly flattened chicken breasts and grilled on a stove top grill pan. The sauce is amazing. Husband loved it.

I have no idea what some of these people are talking about. My picky, anti-everything 15-year-old requests this dish every other night. She hates spicy, sweet, chicken, air, talking to others, participating and the fact that life does not do everything she thinks it should. But she likes this chicken. A lot. Thank God.

I liked the idea of this chicken, but the end result wasn't worth even the minimal effort to make it. The rub and sauce have very little dimension; it needs some additional spices, not just more of the ones already present. My homemade BBQ sauce has much more complex flavors and takes only a few minutes to make. Sorry, but we weren't impressed.

I thought this was fantastic! It's a real keeper. My husband loved it too. I'm not even an experienced griller, but the timing was just right. The sauce is different from what I buy at the store. The cola makes the difference; and by mistake, I bought diet cola. But it was fine. I also thought the spices were just right, not overly spicy. So I guess some readers like it really hot. I made a salad with a CL Thousand Island dressing, roasted green beans, and rice made with chicken broth and onions. Made the recipe as is so I have enought for another meal.

We enjoyed this a lot. Per other readers suggestions I doubled the spices (CL a tends to be on the bland side) and brined the chicken so didn't include the salt. We thoroughly enjoyed this and will definitely add it to the summer rotation.

Pretty good, but nothing fantastic. I liked the sauce, but actually thought it was a bit on the sweet side - better once I added some tabasco on my plate. Surprisingly, my 3 year old didn't like it - thought it was too spicy (admittedly, she is VERY spice sensitive; guess even the chili was too much).

Very bland and boring flavorful. The sauce was not exciting to eat.

I don't see why everyone likes this so much. This recipe was just okay. I used a generic cola which may have made a difference. The cola sauce is just a barbecue sauce, nothing special. I'd rather save the 15-20 minutes spent making a barbecue sauce and just use whatever I can buy at the grocery store.

I used smoky paprika na dmade this on a grill pan and it was really, really good... maybe "outstanding." It was very, very tasty. I made the rub and sauce the night before so the cooking was pretty quick. I would certainly recommend it.

I used shallots instead of onion and regular paprika instead of the sweet paprika. The only other variation was to leave the rub on the chicken for 2 hours before grilling on our Traeger grill. This was a fabulous-tasting sauce. I served along side a black bean and corn salad (also from Cooking Light) and the family loved it. The left over chicken was sliced and put on top of a salad and was served with light ranch dressing for an awesome lunch the next day. Definitely a keeper of a recipe and I wouldn't hesitate to serve it for guests. Bet the sauce would be excellent with pork too.

Delicious variation on BBQ chicken. My family also loved it....served it with dijon mashed potatoes, steamed baby carrots, and a Seghesio pinot noir. I didn't have dark brown sugar or sweet paprika, so used light br. sugar and regular paprika. Didn't seem to make any difference. Will definitely make this again.

This is a definite keeper! Not only is it delicious, but it is quick & easy! I had all of the ingredients on hand, so this will be a great "go to" recipe when I don't have any supper plans. My family loved it (including my 3 & 6 year olds), and it is an easy way to have BBQ chicken on a weeknight! I served it with mac & cheese and steamed green beans.

My husband and I eat a lot -- and I mean a lot -- of chicken, and this was a great way to kick it up a notch on the grill. Like one other reviewer, I did the rub several hours before, and after basting, we had just enough of the glaze left over to pour on the chicken at the table. My husband and I are both big fans, and it's super easy to make (even on a weeknight)! Will probably become a staple in our house!

Great Recipe. The sauce was really tangy. I prepared he sauce and rubbed the chicken a few hours before we were going to BBQ. I also doubled the sauce recipe, but had more than enough. Definitely going to use this recipe again. Maybe Labor Day BBQ or Superbowl.

Wonderful twist on BBQ chicken. I used Diet Pepsi in place of the "cola." I had a shallot on hand which needed to be used, in place of the onion. I added a pinch of cayenne to the sauce for some sweet heat. This was great - my husband complimented the recipe several times throughout dinner. We had grilled zucchini with it. Will add this to the rotation!

FAQs

Why marinate chicken in cola? ›

Baking the chicken in the cola marinade makes it ultra-tender and moist, and it's especially good for chicken thighs, drumsticks and chicken wings. The thick co*ke sauce tenderizes the meat, which makes it mouthwateringly succulent and juicy.

How do you get sauce to stick to grilled chicken? ›

The right time to brush the chicken with the barbecue sauce is about 10 minutes before the chicken is ready. By doing so, the sauce has enough heat and time to caramelize but not scorch. Many cooks baste their chicken or meat too early, causing the sauce to burn.

Can I use Coca-Cola as a marinade? ›

If you're using a lot of Coca-Cola in your marinade (and, hey, you probably are), make sure to watch that soaking time. Any time meat is left in a very acidic marinade for a long time, it will denature and tenderize too much.

Do you put BBQ sauce on chicken before or after grilling? ›

Barbecue sauce typically contains sugar that will brown faster than the meat. This can make it difficult to tell when the chicken is done. To ensure you don't pull the chicken off too soon, add the BBQ sauce when you're nearly done cooking the meat.

What does marinating meat in Coca-Cola do? ›

Firstly, the Coca-Cola tenderizes, moistens, and prevents the meat from drying out. It is better than water because instead of muting or 'watering down' the flavors of the meat, it will not only preserve but heighten the flavor of the meat.

What does marinating meat in co*ke do? ›

But the king of sodas has been used in southern cooking for years — particularly in marinades and sauces for beef and pork. Its sweet acidity can help to tenderize meat, making it an ideal addition for a long slow brine.

Do you put sauce on before or after grilling? ›

Bring out undertones by applying a rub or even marinating the ingredient before grilling. This allows you to avoid adding extra thick liquid to the top of the meat. Then, when your meat nears the end of its grilling, simply apply some sauce as a finishing touch.

How do you keep chicken juicy on the grill? ›

All it takes is 30 minutes in a simple brine solution of 1/4 cup kosher salt dissolved in 4 cups water. This is all the time you need for the chicken breasts to absorb enough moisture so they can better hold up to the heat of the grill without drying out.

Do you cook chicken before adding sauce? ›

It is recommended to brown the chicken first before adding it to the sauce. Browning the chicken adds flavor and helps it retain moisture during the cooking process. You can pan-sear the chicken in a little oil until it develops a golden brown crust before transferring it to the sauce.

What does Coca-Cola do in cooking? ›

Top Tips When Cooking with Coca Cola:

This fizzy drink's acidity level is high, so it also acts as a fantastic meat tenderiser. Most effective meat marinades include some type of citrus or vinegar acid, to break down some of the proteins in the meat. So, co*ke does the same.

What makes Mexican co*ke so good? ›

Many Coca-Cola fans believe that Mexican co*ke tastes more “natural” than its American cousin. This difference in taste is due to the fact that American-made co*ke switched over to using high fructose corn syrup as a sweetening agent in 1980. Mexican co*ke continued using cane sugar to sweeten its version.

Do you season chicken before grilling? ›

Yes, you should always season your chicken before cooking when it's raw. You can even do this up to 24 hours before if you have the time. Why? Because leaving the seasoning on your chicken overnight in the fridge will help it start to trap moisture in the chicken, which will make it nice and juicy once cooked.

Should I put chicken directly on the grill? ›

Grilling only on direct heat zones is generally better for smaller chicken portions, like chicken breasts, tenders, and wings, which are less than a few inches thick. From barbecue sauce to pesto, the sugar content in most sauces makes them easy to scorch, so wait to baste or add sauce until near the end of grilling.

Should you pre cook chicken before grilling? ›

Yes. Precooking food partially in the microwave, oven, or stove is a good way of reducing grilling time. Just make sure that the food goes immediately on the preheated grill to complete cooking.

What happens to a chicken bone soaked in soda? ›

Myth: If you soak a chicken bone in soda for several days, it will start to dissolve. Answer: Confirmed! Soda contains acids such as phosphoric acid and citric acid. If a bone is left to soak for an extended period of time, the acid will begin to weaken its structure.

What can I use instead of cola in marinade? ›

Just replace a portion of the cola with water or chicken broth. If you feel that diluting the cola will cost you in flavor, then add some cola type flavors to the dish, like a little vanilla, cinnamon, clove, black pepper, etc, which will spice things up without adding sweetness.

What makes chicken soft and juicy? ›

Brine. Like a marinade, a brine helps chicken breast soak up as much moisture as possible before cooking. It only requires three ingredients: water, salt, and a pinch of sugar.

Why put Sprite in marinade? ›

Sprite: Adds sweetness and helps to tenderize the meat. 7-up would also work well.
